FORMER SPEAKER NIZAM MOHAMMED IN AN INTERVIEW WITH GUARDIAN MEDIA WEIGHED IN. SAYING:

    Parliament chaos fuels anti-social behaviour

The former speaker also raised serious concerns over the claim that the Leader of Government Business, Barry Padarath, had taken a photograph of a member of staff in the Parliament.

“My concern is not with the taking of the photograph itself. In isolation, that act may appear entirely innocuous. The concern lies in the context in which it occurred and the message that such conduct may convey,” said Mohammed, “Parliamentary staff occupy a unique position within our constitutional framework. They are expected to serve all Members impartially and professionally, often under intense scrutiny and in highly charged political environments. Where allegations of bias have been raised, actions directed at individual members of staff can easily be perceived as personalising a dispute that ought properly to be addressed through established institutional channels.”

Mohammed said no parliamentary employee should be placed in a position where they may feel exposed, targeted, intimidated, or subjected to personal scrutiny simply for carrying out official responsibilities. As such, he called on House Speaker Jagdeo Singh to address the matter directly.

He said, “Such guidance would protect not only the staff involved but also the integrity of the parliamentary administration itself.”

The Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago recently hosted the fifth (5th) Commonwealth Association of Public Accounts Committees (CAPAC) Conference. It followed the theme “Advancing Accountability: Strengthening the Independence, Capacity and Impact of Public Accounts Committees (PACs) across the Commonwealth”. This programme was held at the Red House, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from June 9-10, 2026.

The Opening Ceremony was held on June 9th, 2026 with the national anthem of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, sung by members of the Parliament Choir. The ceremony concluded with brief remarks by the Honourable Jagdeo Singh, MP Speaker of the House of Representatives.

President of the Senate, Sen. the Hon. Wade Mark, gives brief remarks at the opening of the 5th CAPAC Conference

The conference is convened every two (2) years and hosted on a rotational basis among CAPAC member jurisdictions. The Conference serves as a key forum through which Members share experiences, discuss emerging challenges in public financial scrutiny, and examine developments in best practices that enhance accountability, transparency, and good governance. It also provides the opportunity to convene the General Meeting of the Association, during which elections to the CAPAC Executive Board and Executive Committee are conducted, as necessary.

Through presentations, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, participants examined innovative approaches to strengthening Public Accounts Committee (PAC) independence, enhancing oversight practices, and maximizing the impact of PAC recommendations on governance and accountability outcomes.

The conference aimed to strengthen the effectiveness and resilience of PACs within the Commonwealth, with particular focus on the Caribbean region, and to advance the framework for ongoing dialogue, sustained collaboration and continued engagement among Commonwealth nations.

There were a total of twenty one (21) participating legislatures, and fifty five (55) participants – thirty three (33) in person participants, and twenty two (22) virtual participants.

At the conclusion of the programme, participants were able to gain skills and insights in the following areas:

    • To examine and reinforce institutional frameworks including legal, procedural safeguards that support the independence of PACs.
    • To build technical capacity for effective public financial oversight.
    • To examine real-life impact, of PACs by comparing national follow-up and monitoring mechanisms for implementing PAC recommendations.
    • To enhance the platform for peer learning and technical exchange through shared experiences.
    • To enhance regional cooperation among PACs.
    • To strengthen the PAC networks across the Commonwealth by sharing lived experiences, deepening collaboration and expanding global professional networks.

PCOS is being renamed to PMOS. (Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome)

The change comes from experts that say the old name was misleading, stating that it inaccurately suggested ovarian cysts as a defining feature.

Experts say the relabelling of the condition from ‘polycystic ovary syndrome’ to ‘polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome’ is much more scientifically accurate.

Shamfa wins Tobago PNM leadership: Beats Morris, makes history as second woman, steps into national deputy role

Shamfa Ashaki Cudjoe-Lewis has emerged victorious in the People’s National Movement (PNM) Tobago Island Council elections, defeating former PNM Minority Leader Kelvon Morris to become the political leader of the Tobago arm of the party.

Her win marks a historic moment for the movement, as she becomes only the second woman to hold the post, at a time when the party is seeking to rebuild and reconnect with its base in Tobago and across the wider national landscape.

In a statement issued on Monday, PNM Political Leader Pennelope Beckles described the outcome as a significant step forward for the party, noting that Cudjoe-Lewis now also assumes the role of Deputy Political Leader for Tobago Affairs within the PNM’s national structure.

Beckles pointed to Cudjoe-Lewis’s political experience and readiness to lead, highlighting her role in energising the movement as it re-engages citizens. She also underscored the importance of women’s leadership in shaping the party’s next phase.

Cudjoe-Lewis’s political career began in 2010 when she was appointed to the Senate, becoming the youngest Tobagonian to serve in that capacity at the time. She later went on to serve as Member of Parliament for Tobago West for a decade and held Cabinet portfolios including Tourism, Youth, Sport and Community Development.

Her academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in International

Relations and a master’s in International Trade Policy, along with specialised training in economic development and trade through the World Bank Institute. She also previously served as president of the Tobago Youth Council.

Beckles said this mix of experience positions Cudjoe-Lewis to play a key role in unifying and strengthening the Tobago Island Council moving forward.

The PNM leader also acknowledged Morris for his participation in the internal election, thanking him for his service and contribution to the party.

Congratulations were extended as well to the candidates who secured the other 16 positions contested in the election, along with party members who took part in the process.

With the internal contest now settled, attention is expected to shift to rebuilding efforts within the Tobago arm of the party and preparing for future political battles.— Story by I.A.N News

Cudjoe-Lewis, who contested as an independent candidate, was vying against former minority leader and head of the Team Unity slate, Kelvon Morris.

There was another victory for the independents on the night as Nicole Henry won the position of chairman over Team Unity’s Charles Smith and fellow independent Ryan Joefield.

At the party headquarters this morning, a smiling Cudjoe-Lewis was congratulated by approximately 15 supporters.

It was a similarly low-key affair to nomination day when Cudjoe-Lewis arrived by herself to file her papers, while her opponent had dancers and a large group of supporters.

However, on that day she reminded the public, “My people is Kelvon people, Kelvon people is my people.”

Cudjoe-Lewis was joined in the celebrations by her campaign manager, Garth Benjamin, whom she described as a quiet storm.

She said she was very grateful for her campaign team, which she described as small but very impactful.

“It has been the most fun campaign and just listening to what the grassroots had to say,” she said.

She said her budget-friendly approach was deliberate, as there was not much funding for any fanfare.

“All these folks, for the most part, are volunteers, young people who just wanna see change in the PNM.”

On the large turnout of voters yesterday, which saw ballot papers run out twice at one polling station, Cudjoe-Lewis said the momentum has started.

“A lady called me from Tobago East saying, ‘I had put away my party card but I gonna find it. I have it in some boxes downstairs.’”

She said she feels inspired and intends to start a membership drive to build on the buoyant mood among members.

“We have to make sure our party members know what party groups they are in and get those functioning again. Party groups serve as a little hub, but more so a little family in the community.”

She said all members have a vital role to play in the rebuilding of the party after its defeat in the last Tobago House of Assembly elections.

Ballot counting continues at 10 am today as 15 other positions on the executive are still to be filled.

Dr. Rowley On Crime Situation and UNC's Hypocricy

Former prime minister Dr. Keith Rowley has criticised the current administration’s approach to national security, describing its crime strategy as a “rolling state of emergency” driven by what he called “public manipulations.”

On social media, Dr. Rowley argued that those now in office had previously dismissed his government’s attempts to frame violent crime as a public health issue. He accused unnamed officials of contributing little to governance beyond division and bias.

Central Bank: T&T’s growth slows as non-energy sector weakens [FULL TEXT]

Trinidad and Tobago’s economic growth showed signs of moderation in the first three quarters of 2025, driven by weakening activity in the non-energy sector, the Central Bank said in its Annual Economic Survey published yesterday.

According to the Central Bank, the latest official data from the Central Statistical Office (CSO) showed that real GDP increased by 0.2% over the first nine months of 2025, reflecting a 2.2% expansion in energy sector output that offset a 0.6% decline in non-energy sector production.

“Energy sector buoyancy largely reflected a base effect, given maintenance activity by key upstream producers in the first half of 2024. Added impetus to growth accrued from the start-up of production at two new natural gas fields in the second quarter of 2025,” it stated.

The Central Bank stated that unemployment remained relatively low, averaging 4.5% over the first three quarters of 2025. “Based on the official data, this signalled stabilised labour market conditions when compared with the unemployment rate of 4.8% during the same period of 2024. An uptick occurred in the number of persons with jobs alongside a more than proportionate decline in the number of persons without jobs,” it stated.

“However, the labour force fell while the participation rate remained relatively unchanged at 54.7%. Job gains were notably observed in the Wholesale and Retail Trade, Restaurants and Hotels, and Manufacturing sectors,” it stated.

The Central Banks stated that a review of broader labour market indicators presents a more mixed perspective.

“There was a reduction in the number of persons retrenched in 2025, while a decline in the number of job advertisements published in the print media points to eased hiring activity,” it stated.

The Central Bank stated that price pressures were generally contained in 2025 as headline inflation remained low, increasing to 1% from 0.5% in 2024.

“This was underpinned by an increase in both food (3% in 2025 compared to 1.5% in 2024) and core inflation (0.5% in 2025 compared to 0.2% in 2024),” it stated.

The Central Bank said higher energy receipts outpaced the increase in government spending in the fiscal year ended September 2025, resulting in a significantly smaller overall deficit than budgeted.

“The preliminary outturn from the Ministry of Finance shows that the Central Government accounts recorded an overall deficit of $8.1 billion in FY2024/25. This compares with a fiscal deficit of $9.1 billion recorded in the previous fiscal year (FY2023/24) and the mid-year revised budget deficit of $9.7 billion for FY2024/25,” it stated.

“Central Government revenue climbed to $49.1 billion driven mainly by stronger energy receipts while expenditure increased moderately to $57.2 billion owing to higher outlays in transfers and subsidies and goods and services,” the Central bank stated.

The Central Bank stated that domestic and external borrowings, along with withdrawals from the Heritage and Stabilisation Fund (HSF) were used to finance the fiscal deficit.

“Meanwhile, at the end of September 2025, adjusted General Government debt outstanding (which excludes debt issued for sterilisation purposes) reached $146.9 billion, $6.2 billion more than in September 2024,” it stated.

“The Central Bank allowed treasury bills and notes to mature in the financial system and kept the repo rate unchanged at 3.5% during 2025 to support favourable funding conditions to aid domestic economic activity. Continued Government borrowing activity (both the size and timing) led to tighter market liquidity conditions, which the Bank addressed by allowing open market operation treasury securities to mature to keep ample liquidity in the banking system,” the Central bank stated.

According to the Central Bank after declining to $3.5 billion in October 2025, commercial banks’ excess reserves at the Central Bank increased to $4.2 billion by end-December 2025.

The Central Bank stated that Trinidad and Tobago’s external accounts recorded a deficit of US$908.2 million in the first nine months of 2025.

MAJOR BREAK IN MUNICIPAL OFFICER KILLING; SIX DETAINED, FIREARMS RECOVERED

Police have made a major breakthrough in the investigation into the killing of a Municipal Police Officer and the theft of firearms at the Kings Wharf compound in San Fernando.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service confirms that six people are in custody, including two Municipal Police Officers, two women and two men.

During a series of coordinated overnight operations, officers recovered a significant quantity of stolen firearms and ammunition, including multiple pistols and hundreds of rounds.

Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro was on the ground as the investigation intensified in the early hours of this morning.

A security breach at the San Fernando Municipal Police Station has left a female officer dead and the armory compromised. Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro has confirmed the murder of WPC Anushka Eversley, alongside the theft of a significant quantity of weapons and ammunition.

Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro has confirmed the murder of WPC Anushka Eversley, which occurred inside the San Fernando Municipal Police Station. Along with the loss of life, the Commissioner noted that a significant quantity of weapons and ammunition was stolen from the precinct.

“A quantity of weapons and ammunition has also been reported missing from that facility. The matter is under active investigation and all necessary resources have been deployed to ensure a thorough inquiry and the recovery of those weapons.”

Investigations are currently underway to identify the exact amount of hardware taken during the incident.

“Checks are currently being undertaken at this time to determine the exact amount. I see all sorts of figures being bandied around on social media so we are trying to determine the exact amount but thus far all the weapons are said to be the property of the Municipal Police Department and none from private citizens.”

While the scale of the theft is being assessed, the Commissioner assured the public that there is currently no information to suggest a targeted attack against law enforcement by any outside party.

Meanwhile, Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander extended condolences to the family and colleagues of the officer, while expressing confidence in the TTPS’s ability to handle the case. He noted, however, that dismantling long-standing criminal trends is a gradual process.

“Things have been going out of control for a number of years and you all expect us to arrive and just fix it immediately; it don’t work like that you know. Criminality is something that grows from strength to strength so we must now intercept it, treat with it, dismantle it and then you will see the benefit of it. It’s not a now process, it is an ongoing process.”

As the probe widens, investigators are not ruling anything out. Commissioner Guevarro admitted that if the murder and theft prove to be an “inside job,” the betrayal would be profound.

“I would be very disheartened that an officer, a sworn officer, sworn to protect the rights of citizens, uphold the laws of Trinidad and Tobago, could do something so heinous to one of his own fellow officers.”

Every officer on duty at the time of the incident is to be interviewed as authorities work to reconstruct the events that led to the death of Anushka Eversley.

Former Energy Minister Stuart Young is warning that the UNC Government has taken close to $2 billion in retained earnings from TTNGL.

To be clear, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲:

Now TTNGL, a company owned by NGC and publicly traded, has reportedly had nearly $𝟐 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬.

Yes, some dividends will be paid to individual shareholders, but the lion’s share goes to the UNC government

Very little remains with the company as retained earnings to fund its future investment and growth.

The obvious question to this UNC government is: 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲?

And for the UNC trolls: if this is not true, your UNC Government will say so.
