Trinidad and Tobago this is the first sign of collapse of the energy sector under the UNC Government. The new NGC and NEC boards, are driving the Pt Lisas Estate into a crisis. This comes after they forced the President of NEC and executive officers of NGC out of office.

Citizens, the management of stakeholder relationships and the confidence of foreign investors in our energy sector is critical and should be carefully handled.

Unfortunately it is clear that the Prime Minister and her two Ministers of Energy are destroying our energy sector and this will affect investment and also our revenue.

We should be very concerned about the level of incompetence that has been appointed to manage our energy sector.

Unfortunately the mismanagement of the energy sector and the Pt Lisas Estate is having serious negative effects on Trinidad and Tobago’s global and domestic standing.

The impasse between NEC and Nutrien has not been resolved and this is now having a knock on effect on the provision of CO2 (carbon dioxide) to manufacturers and other users in Trinidad and Tobago and the region with a shortage in supply of CO2 looming. This would affect for example, the manufacturing of carbonated beverages which is a major export product for Trinidad and Tobago.
Trinidad and Tobago’s petroleum chemical sector (Ammonia, Methanol, Urea) is very marginal and every irresponsible decision by the government will negatively affect us. Global board rooms looking at the management of their operations at Pt Lisas will now factor in a unilateral increase in electricity rates and an aggressive possibly illegal demand for retroactive port fees driving Trinidad and Tobago into uncompetitiveness.

The mismanagement of the relationships in the energy sector that we are seeing before us is leading to fall out and the potential of long term plant closures.

Our energy sector is the largest foreign exchange earner and a significant employer. In a globally competitive environment we must work hard to keep the foreign investment here, as other countries offer better terms for business.

One of our competitive advantages has been maintaining mutually respectful relationships with the decision makers of energy companies. The current government is doing the exact opposite by being disrespectful and aggressively threatening companies whilst employing childish and irresponsible tactics which lead to the closure of Nutrien.

We have to manage a delicate ecosystem more carefully before it is too late.
