What Is Climate Change?

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun’s activity or large volcanic eruptions. But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.

Humans are responsible for global warming

Climate scientists have showed that humans are responsible for virtually all global heating over the last 200 years. Human activities like the ones mentioned above are causing greenhouse gases that are warming the world faster than at any time in at least the last two thousand years.

The average temperature of the Earth’s surface is now about 1.1°C warmer than it was in the late 1800s (before the industrial revolution) and warmer than at any time in the last 100,000 years. The last decade (2011-2020) was the warmest on record, and each of the last four decades has been warmer than any previous decade since 1850.

Many people think climate change mainly means warmer temperatures. But temperature rise is only the beginning of the story. Because the Earth is a system, where everything is connected, changes in one area can influence changes in all others.

The consequences of climate change now include, among others, intense droughts, water scarcity, severe fires, rising sea levels, flooding, melting polar ice, catastrophic storms and declining biodiversity.

Pt Cumana Sharon comment up on YouTUbe on the video:

Big up the youth advocates! "Youth" have been fighting this fight since I was in secondary school in the 70's before it was called "Clime Change". But don't stop. Keep pushing.

Get more youths to get up stand up and fight for the necessary changes.

With that said, we do have some of the strongest environmental policies and laws in the region. The main issue is that it is hardly enforced and the problem is that people ignore or disregard the rules or just don't care!

As for whether SIDs whose economy is fossil energy dependent should give it up: It is "rich" coming from a citizen of the biggest colonialist state that exploited said oil and energy products coming to tell us that we shouldn't exploit our own resources for the socio-economical betterment of our citizens; By necessity, we are moving inexorably toward other solutions, but it is not something that one can turn off like a faucet!

It should be noted that the Caribbean region is doing MORE with regard to climate change than the BIG So-called "Developed" states who are the major cause of the climate situation. Our mangroves, the rain forests are helping to mitigate the damage the Global North has perpetrated on the world, because of those jurisdiction's greed and disregard for our planet.

So here we (SIDs) are.. 1.5 degrees is a very real thing and we need to keep pushing and pivot to "greener" solutions.

P.S.: But What kind of dotish question is that to ask to weather (Pun intended) to stay and fight for our country - are you going to abandon your homeland, which contributes more to the climate crisis than SIDs do? <steupes>
