Bermuda is pushing for full membership within CARICOM.
The same Bermuda that refuses to allow direct flights into the country from within the region.
Further, while it seeks to integrate more closely with the regional bloc, it is clear that it does not intend to participate in the region’s initiative for the free movement of nationals across member states.
Premier David Burt, representing Bermuda at the recent 46th regular summit of regional leaders in Guyana, emphasized that full membership
does not automatically entail freedom of movement for citizens of other member states to Bermuda, due to commence on March 31 2024.
Many from other Caribbean and CARICOM Countries Including Bermudians expressed their thoughts on the idea of membership without full participation by Bermuda.
QuoteIf y'all don't recognize this circles back to the idea of Bermudian exceptionalisim beat into our heads when we were being told Bermuda was a great place for black slaves because slavery in Bermuda was benign & the centuries of strife sown by the British between us and neighbors
End of the Day this is fucking embarrassing for a political party whose platform still centers independence.
It's just bad faith which is nasty nasty business especially when we will be the ones benefiting it's gross

QuoteThat part. People are highlighting what Burt can/can’t actually allow as a B. O. T. but the principle of the matter is it was egregious to pursue full status when you’re either unable OR unwilling to abide by the terms. To do so is another admission of superiority.
As to be expected the reactions by other Caribbean folk was a bit on the "salty" Side
QuoteThe fact that they want to join, but keep us at bay by not allowing "free movement" is a real no-go. I mean, not that anyone would flock there - it's lovely but way too expensive & hurricane-prone. Net net: they want the gains, but what they planning to offer the region ???
QuoteNo direct flights from the region prevents a large amount of Caricom personnel from entering...flights to there require a Caricom national to have a visa first so they are in fact screening visitors per say
QuoteBermuda wants CARICOM to be dey lil "side-piece" Steuppes Take that and stick it up allyuh... TRIANGLE eh
QuoteThey want the financial benefits but not the people so slight offense, they can kick rocks lol.
QuoteBermuda? Nah. They can jog on.
However as one poster pointed out.... it may not evenbe a "WON'T so much as a "CAN'T"

/Caricom convo today is funny lol. Especially since I think it’s more of a “can’t” situation, & not “we don’t want to”. We aren’t independent. Not even David can allow free movement of foreign nationals, if the UK says no.
The UK left the EU over free movement btw…lol
You know everyone gonna ignore the obvious and lash Burt & Co. but I genuinely think with THIS specific issue, they’re trying to work within their limitations, to OUR actual advantage. It’s the UK who would have final say on that, and I don’t see them ever allowing free movement.
Based on the quotes of that tweet, this point was missed by almost everyone, including Bermudians lol. Everyone mad at us and Burt, meanwhile the real villains are the UK as usual.
Recently The Dominican Republic and Martinique also applied for Membership into CARICOM
