The UNC and the Ship of Theseus: A Political Identity Adrift

    By Dr. Devant Maharaj

The philosophical paradox of the Ship of Theseus asks whether an object that has had all its parts replaced remains fundamentally the same. This quandary captures the transformation of the United National Congress (UNC) under Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s leadership. Once a vibrant, cohesive, and disciplined political force under Basdeo Panday, the UNC has been systematically stripped of its ideological foundation, strategic vision, and political gravitas. What remains today is but a hollow shell, unmoored from its founding ethos and unrecognizable to those who remember its former strength and purpose.

Under Basdeo Panday, the UNC was not merely a political party; it was a movement that transcended ethnic and geographic barriers while maintaining its cultural identity. Panday’s leadership was marked by a blend of strategic acumen and visionary thinking. He understood that to win elections and govern effectively, the party had to reach beyond its traditional Indo-Trinidadian base while still championing the interests of its core supporters.

Panday’s UNC made inroads into the East-West Corridor, a bastion of the People’s National Movement (PNM). He held large, well-organized public meetings in marginal constituencies, addressing the concerns of Afro-Trinidadians without alienating the party’s Indo-Trinidadian supporters. Panday’s outreach extended even to Tobago, traditionally a PNM stronghold, where he engaged the electorate with respect and a genuine commitment to inclusion. These efforts showcased his understanding of the importance of uniting diverse constituencies under a shared vision of national development.

Critically, Panday’s leadership also emphasized the art of alliance-building. The 1995 coalition with the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) was a masterstroke that brought together disparate political entities to secure a shared goal. This historic partnership not only delivered the UNC’s first term in government but also demonstrated Panday’s ability to forge meaningful alliances across the political and ethnic divide. His coalition politics were not based on opportunism but on the strategic pragmatism necessary for enduring political success.

Panday’s UNC was a forum for intellectual debate and dissent. While he maintained firm control over the party’s direction, he encouraged open discussions that enriched its strategic outlook. Figures like Ganga Singh, Vasant Bharath, Jack Warner, Ramesh L. Maharaj, etc. were integral to the party’s intellectual and operational framework, contributing to a political entity that combined grassroots activism with sophisticated policy-making.

In stark contrast, Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s leadership has dismantled the foundational pillars of the UNC. Like the Ship of Theseus, where each plank replaced raises questions about the object’s essence, every decision under her tenure has further eroded the party’s identity. Kamla’s intellectuals are Ravi Ratiram, Vandana Mohit, and other low-grade politicians.

Persad-Bissessar’s UNC has all but abandoned the East-West Corridor and Tobago, effectively conceding these critical battlegrounds to the PNM. Her leadership has shifted the party’s focus inward, prioritizing safe seats and insular rhetoric over national outreach. Gone are the large public meetings in marginal constituencies, replaced by a reliance on a shrinking loyal base. Kamla instead retreats to host Monday Night Forums in Debe, Penal afraid of political meetings in marginal seats. This inward turn has alienated undecided voters and reinforced the perception that the UNC is an ethnically and geographically exclusive party.

The art of alliance-building, a cornerstone of Panday’s strategy, has been entirely neglected under Persad-Bissessar. Her tenure has been marked by divisive rhetoric and erratic decision-making that have alienated potential allies. The party’s inability to collaborate meaningfully UNC members as well as with other political entities underscores its isolation in Trinidad and Tobago’s political landscape.

Under Persad-Bissessar, the UNC has become a party where loyalty is valued over competence. Dissent is no longer seen as a means to strengthen the party but as a threat to the leader’s authority. Internal critics have been vilified and purged, driving away some of the party’s brightest minds. This has left the UNC bereft of strategic thinkers and innovative leaders, reducing it to an entity staffed by sycophants.

Persad-Bissessar’s UNC lacks the ideological coherence that defined the party under Panday. Her leadership has devolved into populism devoid of substance, with no clear vision for national development. This ideological vacuum has rendered the UNC incapable of mounting a credible challenge to the PNM.

The transformation of the UNC under Kamla Persad-Bissessar forces us to confront the philosophical paradox of the Ship of Theseus. If every plank of a ship is replaced, does it remain the same vessel? For the UNC, the answer is painfully clear: it does not. The party has replaced its core values, leadership ethos, and strategic vision, leaving behind a political vessel that bears the name but not the essence of the United National Congress.

While the PNM under Dr. Keith Rowley has made efforts to transcend racial politics—symbolized by the elevation of figures like Stuart Young, of Chinese-Indian ancestry, to leadership positions—the UNC has regressed into a party clinging to outdated tactics and divisive rhetoric. The contrast is stark and damning.

The UNC today is a tragic shadow of its former self. Under Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s leadership, it has lost its ideological foundation, its strategic foresight, and its ability to unite diverse constituencies. The Ship of Theseus paradox is not merely an intellectual exercise; it is a painful reality for the UNC. The party that once inspired hope and commanded respect under Basdeo Panday is gone. In its place is a hollow vessel, adrift in the political sea, captained by a leader who has steered it far from its original course.

The UNC’s transformation is not just a political tragedy but a cautionary tale of what happens when a party loses its soul. For those who remember the UNC’s former glory, its current state is not just different; it is unrecognizable. The party’s ship has sailed, but it is no longer the proud vessel that once charted a course toward national unity and progress. It is a derelict, drifting aimlessly, with no clear destination in sight.

Mr. Young and General Secretary Foster Cummings took questions from the press and were clear the athe entire 21 memebr caucus of MPs were unified in support of Mr. Young as the next Prime Minister

The PRO of the party, Mr. Faris Al-Rawi when asked about "minding" rifts was firm in his response that there was nothing to "mend" but the Gen council gathering was a normal occurrence during a transitional phase and was needed to cement clarity amongst the leadership.

Mr. Al-Rawi also took a moment to remind reporters that there is currently NO Vacancy for Political Leader of the PNM, however acknowledged that it was setting precedent that the Prime Minister and Political Leader would be two separate persons until Dr. Rowley's term ends in 2026

PNM to continue screenings in 15 constituencies

Party Officials confirmed that preparations continue in 15 PNM-held constituencies for the December 2 screening of nominees for those areas. All the incumbents have submitted consent letters to party units indicating their willingness to be nominated.

The nominees will be screened in six batches by a team headed by political leader Dr Keith Rowley at Balisier House from 5.30 pm. December 2nd

The 15 areas represent most of the 22 seats held by the PNM. The party selected prospective candidates for the 19 constituencies held by the Opposition in September and prospective candidates have been in the field working since then.

Constituency executives can make recommendations on their choice of candidate but ultimately the decision on candidates is made by the nine-member screening team.

In St Ann’s East, Candidates are:

    • incumbent MP Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly
    • telecommunication professional Lyndon Lara

Gadsby-Dolly is so far getting the bulk of party unit support despite competition from telecommunication professional Lyndon Lara, the brother of cricket legend Brian Lara

In San Fernando East candidates are

    • incumbent Brian Manning
    • Cocoyea/Tarouba councillor Teresa Lynch

A jumpy tune by San Fernando East supporters and party groups promoting Manning is gaining popularity and includes these verses:

Among the 15 areas to be screened, the unopposed incumbents include

    • La Horquetta/Talparo’s Foster Cummings
    • Arima’s Pennelope Beckles
    • San Fernando West, Faris Al-Rawi
    • Laventille East/Morvant, Adrian Leonce
    • Lopinot/Bon Air West, Marvin Gonzales
    • St Joseph, Terrence Deyalsingh

The Laventille West executive hasn’t met yet to decide who they will recommend to the screening team between

    • incumbent Fitzgerald Hinds
    • attorney Kareem Marcelle
    • Dr Kadelle Jessamy

The La Brea executive meets on Saturday to finalise its recommendation. Seeking the candidacy are:

    • incumbent Stephen McClashie
    • councillor Jillon Lewis
    • alderman Christopher Encinas

The majority of support from party groups and the constituency’s women and youth leagues is with Siparia Regional Corporation alderman Christopher Encinas

After the 15 areas are screened, there will only be seven seats left to be finalised:

    • the three Diego Martin seats including Dr. Rowley’s Diego Martin West constituency
    • the two Port-of-Spain seats, and
    • the two Tobago seats.

    UPDATE: ALANA MATHURA HAS DIED

Alana Mathura, the mother of teenager Hannah Mathura, has died 17 days after being incarcerated in connection with her child’s death.

Alana, 63, was charged alongside her husband, Andrew, with murdering Hannah, 18, at their Valsayn property seven years ago.

According to police, Alana was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope on Thursday night and died early yesterday morning.

Police said yesterday that since Alana was remanded in custody, she had refused to eat and fell ill as a result.

After the news broke, some people took to social media to celebrate her death.

However, one of her sons yesterday said she loved all her children.

Speaking briefly with Guardian Media, Jeremiah Mathura said the death of his mother was painful and the negative comments on social media were vexing.

Asked about the life of his mother, Jeremiah said, “My mother was quiet, and she loved Hannah, that is all I will say. Regardless of if that will contradict the narrative, she was quiet and she loved all her children.”

On October 15, Alana and husband Andrew, 66, were charged with murdering their daughter on a date unknown between July 8, 2017, when she was last seen alive, and March 13, this year, a day after her skeletal remains were unearthed in the backyard of the family’s Butu Road, Valsayn home.

Hannah’s bones were excavated from the backyard of their home on March 12. Information given to the police by a family member was that Hannah died and was buried in the backyard some time in June 2017.

Her parents were arrested shortly after her remains were found but later released pending further inquiries, before they were rearrested last month and subsequently charged.

DNA tests done on the bone marrow and biological tissue-like cartilage remaining from decomposed skeletal remains were cross-referenced with Hannah’s siblings to confirm that they were related.

Contacted yesterday, Andrew Mathura’s attorney Tahira Davis Gibson-Sobers said her client will be devastated by the news.

“I know the news will truly sadden him. I suspect he will be devastated by the news, although I do not know if he has been informed. In our discussions, he has shown concern for his wife and her well-being so I know he will be devastated by the news.”

Gibson-Sobers said her client and his wife were remanded in custody as they awaited full disclosure from the State before applications for bail were made. The couple were scheduled to return to court for a sufficiency hearing on April 1, 2026.

Businessman gets injunction against Is This Your Man- T&T Facebook group

A HIGH COURT judge has granted an injunction to a businessman featured in a post on the Is This Your Man – T&T and Caribbean? Facebook account.

Justice Margaret Mohammed granted the injunction on October 25.

The judge allowed the businessman to serve the injunction and lawsuit on the administrators of the social media page via Facebook messenger and/or through the page and another account, The Cheater’s Directory.

The court’s order was served on the page’s administrators on October 30. It said the injunction was granted on the businessman's undertaking that if the court finds that its order caused loss to the defendants and decides they should be compensated, he would have to comply with any order the court makes.

The injunction restrains the administrators of the page from “writing, printing, publishing, broadcasting, circulating and/or causing to be circulated, whether by written, printed, or any medium whatsoever including but not limited to Facebook and/or any social media whatsoever, or otherwise defaming and/or publishing defamatory content relating to the claimant and/or his business. It also restrains them from keeping up the post about the businessman and his business.

The businessman has asked for his name not to be published because of the distress he has suffered through the publication on the social media account.

His application was filed by his attorneys Joseph Sookoo and Kamini Ramraj.
It said the page had “obtained an infamous reputation” for naming and shaming Caribbean men via allegations by named and unnamed sources, for conduct including infidelity, debt and/or criminal activity.

The publication which featured the businessman also referred to his business and made certain allegations against him.

“It is clear that the post, for the meanings attributed to it and described, is defamatory in nature.

“Since the publication of this said post, his clients and business partners have been contacting him and expressing various opinions which have affected the business relationships and jeopardised company contracts which he relies on.”

It also said while the page’s administrators refused to identify the source of the material for the post, he believed it was a woman with whom he had had a short relationship and who was unhappy when he ended it.

The application also denied all the allegations made in the post. His lawyers also asked for the post to be taken down, but the application said the pre-action correspondence was instead published with assertions that they “intended to continue publishing and inviting comments.”
His lawsuit said, “The claimant has become distressed and ashamed to venture out in the community and meet with business associates and the public.

“He feels that he is an object of scorn and ridicule."

The businessman is claiming damages, aggravated and exemplary, on the basis that the administrators of the pages deliberately made and/or published defamatory statements despite ignoring the risk that they may be false and sought to maximise the damage and distress inflicted on the claimant while profiting off the increased and/or continued viewership of the page.

“They also refused to withdraw the post, mocked the claimant and his attorneys.”

An affidavit filed on October 18, in support of the injunction application said the original page could not be found, but a group had been created with the same name.

The businessman used a friend’s profile to gain access to it and saw an announcement that the Facebook page was suspended temporarily but administrators were actively working on creating a new forum.

A link was then provided to a page named Is this your man – T&T and the Caribbean/The Cheater’s Directory, with photos and screenshots of posts from the disabled page. These were attached to the lawsuit.

Prime Minister described certain members of the opposition as "louts" and "miscreants" for their criticism of Indian industrialist Navin Jindal

PNM chairman and Energy Minister Stuart Young addressed speculations surrounding the PNM's cancelled internal elections, saying three positions are not due for re-election until 2026: the political leader, chairman and general secretary.

He made the announcement, he said, "to clarify any confusion." Young said the vice chair and other positions will expire within two years.

He was speaking at a media briefing following the party's general council meeting at Balisier House, Port of Spain on October 19.

Young was accompanied by party's general secretary and Minister of Youth Development and National Service Foster Cummings.

Cummings said the PNM is following its usual course of activities and constitutional arrangements. Speaking about the meeting, he described it as another "very successful general council meeting."

Discussing the cancelled upcoming internal election, which was communicated via a media release that read, "The People’s National Movement wishes to advise that its 51st annual convention, as well as the internal election originally scheduled for Sunday, November 17, 2024, has been cancelled."

Cummings said the party's constitution grants the political leader authority over the party's political direction and the general council ratified the leadership's decision to set a new date for the convention. He said the council approved the decision, adding, "We await further updates on the matter."

As Cummings spoke, Young chimed in to affirm the leadership's decision, saying it was both unanimous and collective.

"The PNM leadership consists of the political leader, chairman, lady vice chair, four deputy political leader: three from Trinidad and one from Tobago and the general secretary. We presented a motion to the council membership today, which was passed."

Asked about the reason for the cancellation, Young said, "The PNM is strategic and does not make decisions impulsively. The Council trusted the leadership's decision and I won’t disclose specific PNM strategies."

Cummings said the Prime Minister informed the council at the meeting nominations for 15 constituencies will be called effective October 21.

The constituencies are: Toco/Sangre Grande, Arima, Lopinot/Bon Air West, Tunapuna, La Horquetta/Talparo, Arouca/Maloney, O'Meara, St Joseph, St Ann’s East, Laventille East, Morvant, Laventille West, San Fernando West, San Fernando East, La Brea and Point Fortin.

He said instructions will be sent out on October 21, allowing constituencies three weeks to submit nominations. Following that, the screening process for these constituencies will begin.
