NAVIGATING POS TT IMMIGRATION OFFICE APPOINTMENTS - A DEEP DIVE

Navigating the Immigration & Passport Services Office in Port of Spain is often an endurance sport, requiring preparation for a complex "figure it out" system. This comprehensive guide outlines the unwritten rules and steps necessary to successfully navigate the process, aiming to bypass the confusion often described in community discourse.

⏱️ PORT OF SPAIN IMMIGRATION TIMELINE:

  • 07:00 AM – Arrival & Line Up
  • 10:00 AM – The Interview (3-Hour Entry & Wait Window)
  • 11:00 AM – Cashier & Final Exit (45–60 Minute Payment Queue)
  • TOTAL DURATION: ~4 Hours

Planning a trip to the Port of Spain Immigration Office? Read this before you go. Be prepared to spend approximately 4 hours dealing with bureaucracy, strict document scrutiny, and the golden rules to avoid getting bouffed.

Having been to the POS TT Immigration office 3 times in the last 2 weeks, I wanted to share some basic info with everyone re Passport Appointments. I am doing this because once you get there, it is pretty much a “figure it out” system that leaves people confused & bewildered.

ARRIVAL:

People line up from early regardless of their appointment time. If you have an appt (or don’t) you do not need to get there before the sun comes up - you will be waiting (inside & out) regardless. So get there for between 6:30 - 6:55 am and join the line.

THE LINE:

There are 2 lines - a long one to the left, a short one to the right. Left is Passports (application, renewal, collection), right is other immigration matters. If you are there for ANYTHING to do with a passport, join the left line.

7:00 AM: Is when you are let into the building single file to go through a security scanner. Those with appointments go first, those without follow. Sometimes those with appointments form a 3rd line in front the stairs - if you have an appt and that line is moving, join that.

SECURITY:

No knives (including pen knives), lighters etc. If you have a water bottle (plastic or reusable) or anything with liquid (incl an insulated coffee mug) you will have to leave it on a table at the entrance. Make sure it is labeled if you want to collect it after.

AFTER SECURITY:

Your first stop is to the left (ground floor). The room has a huge row of seats to the left, an area behind (sign reads Waiting Room 1) and an enclosed “receptionist” area to the right. DO NOT GO TO THE RECEPTIONIST (they only deal with 4th floor matters)

IF YOU HAVE AN APPOINTMENT:

Proceed immediately to join the line in the WAITING ROOM 1 area. Appointment times do not matter - this is first-come, first-served - just join the line and wait to be called to the window (families can send 1 person to line up while the rest sit)

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN APPOINTMENT:

Have a seat in the waiting area (as close to the WAITING ROOM 1 sign as possible). After they have finished with the appointment line they will call for those who do not have appointments but have emergencies)

PROOF OF EMERGENCY:

They say you must have proof of an emergency - This includes letters from work if you have to travel for business: travel bookings if you have a trip; funeral announcement if you have to travel for that

IF YOU ARE THERE TO COLLECT:

Do not join the appointment line, instead go to the WAITING ROOM 1 area window and wait to catch someone’s eye and say “here to collect” - they will take your slip from you. Sometimes someone will come out & ask who is here to collect.

WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE:

Originals & Photocopies of all docs required. Officers reject copies that are crooked, blurry, too dark or have a finger or other item in them. There is a shop across the street in the Parkade (ground floor, extreme left) that does copies - $2 per copy.

TRACK PAK ENVELOPES:

The shop mentioned above also sells the TTPOST Track Pak envelopes. Note, you only need this if you are not expediting your passport. If you are expediting, you go back to collect.

3RD FLOOR:

Once your application & docs have been reviewed & you are good to go, they will be put in a plastic envelope with a Number. You will either be told to go to the 3rd floor immediately or to sit & wait until the range of numbers yours falls into is called to proceed.

Take the elevator to the 3rd floor, exit, turn left, go to the “receptionist” counter, hand in your envelope & have a seat. Listen for your name. There are 9 cubicles along a long corridor so don’t be afraid to ask who is calling you as it can be difficult to tell

FINAL NOTES:

I noticed there is no accommodation for those with Special Needs (I witnessed the trauma of a special needs child) or Disabilities so be aware. Also you are not “supposed” to use your phone while there (buffs are issued) - bring a book/colouring book etc. HAVE A PEN!

-END-
