FROM THE HON. CAMILLE ROBINSON REGIS [FACEBOOK POST] SENT TO BOUNXUP VIA PHONE TEXT

I’m deeply saddened by the fact that this internal election has turned into the bashing of people who genuinely care for and have worked diligently for our beloved Party and Country.

I recall when Dr Rowley challenged Mr Manning for the position of Political Leader. I supported Mr Manning and was a frontline speaker and not one day did I see the need to speak ill of Dr Rowley or members who chose to support him.
There was no need as it was a contest amongst family and in that case we didn’t need to bring down one for the other to win, we needed to highlight why it was felt that one candidate had the better ability to lead at that time. I was not even a candidate but I spoke several times in support of Mr Manning, never in any way denigrating Dr R who had a legitimate right to challenge.
In fact during the Campaign I went to Dr R’s home and gave him and my school mate Sharon, a Rottweiler puppy we never became unkind to each other, or spoke ill of each other or spoke ill about members who supported him, as a matter of fact Kamaludin Mohammed who was vying for Chairman of the Party with Dr R, was the speaker at the Conference of the Arouca/South Constituency that I represented.

I repeat that there is no need to unfairly damage your opponents in order to win. At the end of the day we need all hands on deck. All ah we is one family. We must be free to make our choices without concern about vilification or consequences. The only consequence at the end of this Internal Election must be that the best person for each position must evolve the winner and with boundless faith in our destiny we take our Party forward.

Further, after the elections everyone remains a PNM and in the PNM. We will need to work together to fortify our Party and that becomes difficult if some seem hell bent on hurting others

The PNM and its leaders and members must remain committed to standing firm in principle and truth, representing the people with clarity, conviction, and dignity—even amidst the noise and challenges.

It is now very sad to see Dr Rowley who only wanted and still wants what is best for our Party and Country under attack from some of his own party, indeed persons whose political career he resurrected and whom he entrusted with high office, being vilified by our own and at the same time our opponents are vilifying him. It’s painful to see that taking place. It is so unnecessary and unfortunate.
Unbelievably though is that some members of the leadership who are being accused of failing us form an integral part of the One Love, isn’t that contradictory?

I hold fast to the belief that truth, discipline, and integrity will always prevail.
    Choose wisely.

Attorney Farai Hove Masaisai will again be seeking the post of People’s National Movement (PNM) chairman
in the party’s internal election and will be leading the People’s Champion (PC) slate.

His slate is the first to emerge for the internal poll.

The internal election for 16 executive posts is being held following the party’s April 28 General Election defeat to the United National Congress (UNC).

Nomination Day is Monday and voting is on June 22, followed by the June 29 election convention.

Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles will seek the post of political leader. Former PNM leader Dr Keith Rowley resigned soon after the General Election defeat, as did chairman Stuart Young and deputy leader Rohan Sinanan.

Port-of-Spain Mayor Chinua Alleyne and four incumbent officers have so far confirmed they will contest posts.

Alleyne unsuccessfully contested the post of general secretary in 2018 against Foster Cummings.

Cummings hasn’t replied to questions about whether he will seek the post again but party sources said he will. He also hasn’t said if he will lead a slate of candidates seeking to retain posts they currently hold.

Masaisai yesterday confirmed he will be contesting at the helm of the People’s Champion slate but did not say who else would be on the slate.

“I understand there is much enthusiasm. All will be revealed at our upcoming campaign launch,” he said

In the PNM’s 2022 internal election, Masaisai, leading a PC slate, contested the chairmanship against Young and Kenneth Butcher.

Young was part of the Leaders in Service slate which won. Butcher was part of the team headed by ex-minister Karen Nunez-Tesheira, who unsuccessfully contested the leadership against Rowley.

Other People’s Champion members who unsuccessfully contested in 2022 were former PNM minister Alicia Hospedales, who sought the post of welfare officer and Janelle John-Bates, who vied for the post of assistant general secretary.

John-Bates, who was appointed an opposition senator last week, said she will not be on any slate for this election.

The PC team described themselves as committed professionals within the PNM led by Masaisai.

“We first contested the party’s internal elections in 2022 with a clear purpose: to revitalise a culture of service, strengthen member engagement, and support meaningful reform from within. We’re guided by the principles of servant leadership, believing that true leadership is grounded in humility, accountability, and consistent action,” the group said.

“We advocate for respectful dialogue, evidence-informed decision-making, and a political culture that listens, learns, and leads by example and with integrity.

“Our team believes the People’s National Movement is at its best when it embraces diversity of thought, empowers new leadership, and stays responsive to the changing needs of our membership and nation. We’re committed to helping build a party that is institutionally strong, people-centred, and equipped to meet the challenges of a new era.”

He added, “Grounded in service and driven by purpose, the People’s Champions remain ready to work alongside all who share a vision for a more inclusive, dynamic, and future-focused PNM—one that honours its proud history while preparing boldly for what lies ahead.”

Masaisai, who is of Zimbabwean and Trinidadian lineage, is a former Trinity Junior School and Trinity College, Moka student. He studied law in England and is a senior partner at Hove & Associates.

In 2022, he was the registrar of Friendly and Building Societies and president of the Heliconia Foundation for Young Professionals.

Current PNM chairman Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly hasn’t said whether she will seek the chairmanship and there’s been no reply from Young on whether he will contest any post.

Laventille West MP Kareem Marcelle, an attorney, said participation in the internal election “is under consideration.”

Tabaquite constituency chairman Curtis Shade is seeking the post of field officer, the position he was going to contest in 2022 but withdrew. Current field officer Terrence Beepath hasn’t said whether he will seek re-election.

Among the party officials contesting again are

    • operations officer Irene Hinds,
    • elections officer Indar Parasram,
    • assistant general secretary Patricia Alexis and
    • welfare officer Maxine Richards.

When asked if she would contest the election, lady vice chairman Camille Robinson-Regis said: “Nomination Day is June 2.”

Also expected to contest are education officer Laurel Lezama and PRO Faris Al-Rawi, although they have not confirmed this yet.

Those not contesting are social media officer Kwasi Robinson, treasurer Kazim Hosein, youth officer Jeniece Scott and labour relations officer Jennifer Baptiste-Primus.

Also, Devon Welch is expected to contest for Social Media Officer

    HER STORY

Krisann Bedassie, 17, has made history by becoming the first student from T&T to be accepted into the prestigious Yale Young Global Scholars Programme.

However, although she received a merit-based scholarship covering tuition, accommodation and healthcare, the Form 5 St Joseph Convent, San Fernando, student still needs approximately US$4,000 to make this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity a reality.

The two-week programme is a highly selective academic enrichment initiative for outstanding high school students from across the globe. The session, which runs from July 6 to 18, will focus on law, politics, and economics—subjects close to Krisann’s heart.

“I am very excited because Yale is an Ivy League university and this stands as an accomplishment not just for me but all of Trinidad and Tobago because I am the first admitted student from Trinidad and Tobago,” she said.

Her acceptance was based on academic excellence with an exceptional GPA and a broad portfolio of extracurricular activities.

As a 2024 National Youth Award recipient in the category of Health and Wellness, a Sustainable Development Goal Ambassador for UNESCO, and an awarded spoken word artiste, she had to problem qualifying for the scholarship.

Because she is a minor, she wants her mother to accompany her for safety reasons. However, they require additional funds for accommodations. “If you could help somebody then why should you decline them that opportunity? I am not asking for a $1 million. I am just asking for a substantial contribution to make my dream a reality because this serves as a big deal for me and our country and I would really like to take advantage of the opportunity. So, if you can help me, I would really appreciate it,” she urged.

Krisann, who hopes to pursue a career as a UN ambassador, believes in advocating for those who cannot.

“I’ve been educated about the importance of using your voice for the right things. I don’t want to be left behind when pivotal decisions are being made because I understand the importance of these decisions. I have decided to learn about politics, law, and economics not just because they interest me, but because I want to help achieve a better Trinidad and Tobago.”

Her mother, Susannah Bedassie, a single parent and hairdresser, said Krisann has remained focused despite many challenges. “She is committed to making this world a better place, and I’m truly thankful for that,” she said proudly. Although their tickets were sponsored by a private donor, Krisann is disappointed at the lack of support from corporate entities. She sent out more then 80 emails seeking assistance but got no response.

“I am still thankful because I believe that if God has brought us this far, he would finish it,” said Krisann.

Anyone willing to assist can donate funds to the First Citizens Bank account number 1984690, or contact Krisann and her mother at 336-2805.

WASA was slated for restructuring under the PNM Government and the work had starte. However the new Kamla Persad Bisser Regime has decided to scrap the plan and made a show of tearing up the document The content cannot be displayed because you do not have authorisation to view this content.

The planned restructuring exercise at the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA), which was set to see the removal of hundreds of managers and them being replaced by 34 senior persons, has officially been scrapped.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar made the announcement at yesterday’s post-Cabinet media briefing at the Red House, Port-of-Spain, where she confirmed Cabinet had rescinded the People’s National Movement (PNM)-administration’s restructuring plan.

In sealing the deal, Persad-Bissessar ripped up the existing transformation policy before her Cabinet colleagues and those on hand.

Persad-Bissessar said, “Today, the Cabinet rescinded the previous cabinet decision of the PNM to brutalise, to demonise and attack WASA workers, WASA management and the mandate of WASA.”

In 2022, former Public Utilities minister Marvin Gonzales announced WASA was reducing its 426 management positions by 50 per cent. He also announced plans for a new executive team—positions that have since been filled.

She also said negotiations with the unions will take place for restructuring of the bargaining units. Persad-Bissessar explained that the move will save the country approximately $30 million annually.

“The WASA’s core function is to increase water production and distribute throughout the country.

Today, we will announce and can announce and have approved that the changes to the management of WASA result in savings of about $30 million annually, at least $30 million annually, and that then we can use to go into critical areas of national development,” the PM said.

She also called on WASA workers to cooperate following her decision.“Today, I ask of you in WASA that you do the right thing. Do your part to make sure that WASA fulfils its mandate to deliver water

You know they say one hand doesn’t clap. We need two. One hand doesn’t clap. But you know what? One hand can slap. So, let’s put the two together and clap. Let’s work together.

I call on the WASA workers, as we give you what you wanted, this is what you asked for. “We have honoured our promise and we ask you now, let’s put all our hands together, all hands on the wheel, and deliver water for all.

”Reassuring WASA workers that there will be no mass job cuts, Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath further explained that Cabinet’s decision only affects 34 top senior managers—not including WASA CEO Keithroy Halliday, an attempt to relieve the “top-heavy layers” at WASA, according to him.

Padarath said the new management structure will include a CEO, so Halliday’s job is safe for now. Halliday was only appointed in December last year.

Padarath said, “The decision of the Cabinet today only affects 34 positions of top senior managers that was brought in under the transformation process.

So, you’re looking at top senior managers with salaries ballooning over $100,000 with perks. It’s a top-heavy layer of executive managers that would have been brought in under Minister Gonzales.

“Many of those 34 were in substantive positions before and then came on to contractual arrangements. So, therefore, there will be a variation in terms of whether or not who among those 34 will go back to substantive positions.

But, there will be no mass of employees going home at WASA.

Actually, what the Prime Minister has done today is secure the jobs of over 5,000 WASA workers that were in limbo because of that fear of the transformation process and the plan that was on its way to the RIC (Regulated Industries Commission) to determine the new water rate.

All of that has been now scrapped.”Padarath said WASA will now have a different approach to its employees.
He added, “One of the areas that we criticise the former administration about is that they did not contemplate alternatives in terms of their management style that they projected and in terms of water production and water delivery.

So, what we want to announce today is that there will be a more people-centred approach, particularly with WASA employees …

We are ensuring that there’s a more structured and a more cohesive management style coming out of WASA, where you have a smaller core team that is able to achieve the mandate, which is water for all.

”He said Government will also be looking at infrastructural projects and alternative management styles.

In the coming weeks, Padarath added that a lot of “scandalous revelations” about spending at WASA will be addressed.

Addressing where the funds will come to pay WASA workers, he said “Cutting out the waste, mismanagement and corruption of the People’s National Movement and put the money in the hands of workers, as opposed to the big boys and big girls who got these cushy jobs in the People’s National Movement.”

Attempts to contact Halliday were unsuccessful yesterday.
Guardian Media also reached out to several senior WASA members.

One of them said the news was not shocking, as WASA workers had faced job uncertainty for years.

“WASA would have gone through emotional trauma and that trauma is uncertainty throughout the years because of changes in government.

WASA is a political football at the end of the day. Each government uses WASA for their own benefit and that’s why WASA is in the place it is in,” the employee, who did not want to be named, said.

“I’m not saying WASA is the best but we can’t make WASA look bad all the time and you dependent on the government for two-thirds of operational costs. The government will have a say, so whatever the government says goes...

The problem with WASA is compliance.”

Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath met with employees of the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) yesterday, some of whom he says were “on the chopping block” under the previous People’s National Movement (PNM) administration.

During a brief visit to WASA’s headquarters, Padarath addressed staff in what he described as a meet-and-greet session.

Speaking with Guardian Media after sharing photos to his social media page, the minister said employees expressed relief and gratitude for the security of their jobs under the current Government.

He assured that more details will be revealed during tomorrow’s post-Cabinet media briefing.

Padarath's visit came days after Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, at a post-Cabinet media briefing, announced that the Government would scrap the planned WASA restructuring programme initiated by the previous People's National Movement regime

The PM said the move was part of cost-cutting measures the Cabinet felt was necessary. Persad-Bissessar said the move was expected to save WASA at least $30 million annually.

Speaking after the PM at the briefing, Padarath had reassured WASA workers that there would be no mass job cuts but explained that the decision would only affect 34 top senior managers.
    [...]

"There has been no word from Padarath since on whether that variation process has begun.

However, the announcement caused some unease among workers at the utility.

In 2022, then-public utilities minister Marvin Gonzales announced a significant restructuring of WASA, aiming to reduce its 426 management positions by 50 per cent.

This move was part of a broader strategy to cut operating costs by 25 per cent and enhance the utility’s efficiency.

The decision followed a 2016 Cabinet report that highlighted WASA’s overstaffing, noting that the authority’s management structure was more than double the approved size, with 426 managers instead of the recommended 172. The report also indicated that WASA’s total workforce exceeded 5,000 employees, far surpassing the 3,600 deemed appropriate for its operations.

In July 2022, Gonzales confirmed that the restructuring was underway, with the Human Resource Advisory Committee approving new executive compensation packages.

Subsequently, nine new managers were appointed, including Halliday, a St Kitts and Nevis national, as the new CEO. Following the establishment of the new executive team, the committee planned to advise on the appointment of 34 deputy positions to support the leadership.

Before the planned restructuring, WASA’s organisational structure comprised 12 executives overseen by the board of commissioners and the CEO. However, the hierarchy was said to be complex with overlapping reporting lines.

The selection / screening process for PNM Candidates went on in earnest on Monday Dec 2nd.

A disturbing perception and takeaway is that the committee caved to the bullying and rah-rah noise coming from certain quarters in making their decision.

While some in Town celebrating and doing victory laps (and rubbing it een) some saying there was intimidation and the pickers took the path of least resistance to avoid getting jook with picka!

While politics is essentially a "popularity" contest - We not choosing a Miss Universe Queen. Choosing the best candidate based on their experience, intellect, character, integrity and suitability for the constituency should be the overriding criteria.

Our country's well being and yes, even our democracy as we know it, is at stake.
