MR. ROGER BOOTHMAN LAID TO REST AND EULOGISED FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION TO OUR CULTURAL LANDSCAPE

Musician Roger Boothman was celebrated on January 18 for his extraordinary contributions to TT’s artistic legacy.
Boothman, a songwriter, and artist, died on January 9 at the age of 66.
He was remembered at a funeral service at St Mary’s Church, George Cabral Street, St James, where family and friends paid tribute to his artistry, compassion and resilience.
His brother David Boothman, delivering the eulogy, described Roger as the family’s “moral compass” and a man of rare creative depth.
He spoke of his brother’s profound sensitivity, humour and artistic vision, which left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
“He left with us a resonance to remind us that love exists and love will not allow love to suffer,” David said.
Roger had two sisters and two brothers, but no children. His family remembered him as a deeply devoted uncle.
His niece, Shanelle Carballo Lemesey, said in her tribute, “He was a light in our lives, always showing up with a big heart and boundless love. Though he had no children of his own, he poured all his heart into being the best uncle anyone could ask for. He took that role seriously.”
Born into a family of cultural luminaries, Roger was exposed to artistic excellence from an early age.
His uncles Geoffrey and Boscoe Holder were iconic figures in Trinidadian and international art.
Geoffrey Holder, a Tony Award-winning actor, dancer, choreographer, director and designer, gained fame for his role as Baron Samedi in the James Bond film Live and Let Die. Boscoe Holder, painter and musician, captured the vibrancy of Caribbean life through his paintings.
Growing up in this creative environment, Boothman gravitated naturally toward the arts. A graduate of Tranquillity Secondary School, he earned distinction in art in 1975 and quickly established himself as a formidable presence in the local arts scene.
His contributions to music were also extensive and illustrious.
Boothman became the first Trinidadian to win the Caribbean Broadcasting Union award and achieved a historic double victory in the Commonwealth Song Competition in 1993, securing both first and second place.
David fondly recalled his brother’s keen cultural insight, quoting him as saying, “Our culture was more complex than Jean Pierre,” reflecting Roger’s wit and understanding of TT’s intricate cultural fabric.
Beyond his accolades, Boothman dedicated himself to nurturing emerging talent. He mentored several prominent artists, including Nadella Benjamin, Jerell Forbes, and Roland “Rembunction” Yearwood.

Roger Boothman
His impact extended into education, inspiring countless students through his work as a tutor. His contributions were recognised in 2024 with the Hummingbird Silver Medal for his contribution to culture and the arts.
Despite his remarkable achievements, Boothman faced significant personal challenges. David revealed that Roger lived with bipolar disorder, a condition he managed with medication for decades.
David likened him to John Nash, the mathematician depicted in the film A Beautiful Mind. However, unlike Nash, who was schizophrenic and had bipolar disorder, Roger experienced only the latter.
“He was so gifted that many times, for instance, he would play the piano for three days straight when he was on his high…moved by some divine nature,” David said.
“Out of that came the gift of a lot of compositions, a lot of wonderful, well-thought-out, inspired lyrics.”
David also reflected on the challenges Roger faced later in life, as he became disillusioned with a changing cultural landscape.
He said his brother lamented a “mindless and heartless” culture steeped in nepotism and competition, lacking the romance, love, and music that once defined TT.
The Boothman family were advocates for mental health awareness, championing the Bipolar Society in the 1980s.
David urged greater compassion and understanding, noting the societal tendency to dismiss those with bipolar disorder or other mental health conditions, particularly the homeless. He said Roger’s creativity was inseparable from his condition and called for more awareness and support.
“Love exists and love will not allow love to suffer,” David said, stressing the family’s unwavering commitment to Roger throughout his life.
Though Boothman’s journey has ended, David said his “beautiful mind” will continue to inspire through his legacy of music, art and mentorship.

THE "POLITICAL HIT PIECES" JUST KEEP ROLLING IN PEEP THIS CA-CA NEZ NAH BOI. SOME PPL DIGGING THEIR PLOT IN THE POLITICAL PONTIFICATORS CEMETERY
FROM NEWSAUCE FACEBOOK PAGE
WARNING: FOR THE SENSITIVE FOLKS AMONG US THIS POST MAY CONTAIN LEAKS (but no Cabinet Notes or Proclamations).
As with all structured political parties, the PNM conducts polls on a regular basis especially heading into elections. To get a sense of which seats are in trouble, which MPs are seen as weak, which marginals may need more. focus and how confident voters feel about the various political leaders. In 2024 at least two polls were conducted and both polls, I am told, revealed that one MP in the field of candidates remained consistently first as the choice to lead and at each polling her lead grew wider and wider, so much so, the other candidates were distant second and third place holders.
The cancelling of the 2024 Annual Convention then threw a spoke in the wheel of the party's planning. And with that cancellation all possibilities of having a vote for a PL in the 2025 election went out the window.
The assumption then was that the current PL would continue to lead the party into the 2025 GE. That belief held until December.
The next internals was due in 2026 anyway. And that election would allow the full membership to have its say and allow ALL interested candidates to throw their hat in the ring and explain to voters why they are the best person to lead the party.
Now we come to the Tobago retreat. A straw poll was taken to gauge support of two MPs seen as possible leaders. Two candidates were named: one who had been polling well internally and one who was less successful.
Members at the retreat were given the assurance that the poll results were not to be made public. The information was only for the President, in case she asked the PM, upon his resignation, who the party would favour.
Only one person saw and counted the ballots. And immediately after the ballots were read out and counted they were shredded. There was no recount and no third person was able to see the ballots.
No one thought this strange because they had beem assured this was a straw poll that only the President was likely to hear about.
Then right after the poll was done, there came a press conference announcing the results to everyone. Running counter to what was said and agreed to.
Based on Section 76 (1) A of our Constitution, the PM has to be the leader of the political party that won the election.
Based on section 76 (1) B an MP can be PM if he or she commands the majority of the votes of the Lower House.
That MP would need 21 votes. Hence the current need for all signatures.
Based on that same Constitution that ppl fraid to discuss right now, the PL and the PM are seen as one and the same person.
It remains to be seen how a party campaigns with both a PL and a PM being separate persons.
Today's General Council Meeting is very important, not just for the party, but for the entire country.
Today's meeting will establish for us whether we ALL get to vote openly for our leaders or we have our leaders handpicked for us in a straw poll.

Woman being sued to repay ex-boyfriend’s loan!
A woman who signed as a guarantor on a loan for an ex-boyfriend who is now in jail is being sued for $125,000 after the entire loan was not repaid.
When the matter came up yesterday before Justice Frank Seepersad, the parties were given directions regarding filing certain documents and it was adjourned to February 19.
Through his attorney Abdel Mohammed, Gerard Tang Foon filed a lawsuit against Sharmila Ramroop who owns a dental practice for breach of contract and $125,004.
In his affidavit, Tang Foon said on June 29, 2021, he entered into an Investment Agreement with Farand Deonanan, the borrower, and Ramroop as the guarantor.
He claimed they agreed that he would provide $250,000 to Deonanan for Package Taxi Ltd, for which Deonanan and Ramroop were directors.
Ramroop, he said, had offered to stand as security and indemnity for the money for the duration of the four-year agreement.
However, he said Deonanan only made part-payments totalling $124,996 but failed to repay the full amount of $250,000.
As a result of defaulting on the repayment of the balance of $125,004, he said Ramroop being the guarantor was obligated to pay him. Tang Foon stated he found out that Deonanan was sentenced to two years in jail for a fraud-related offence. He further claimed that Deonanan’s company appeared to be a shelf company.
In her defence, Ramroop who owns a dental practice, said Deonanan owned the company and though she was named a director, she had no involvement in any aspect of the business.
At the time of the transaction, she said she was in the later stages of her third trimester and was not fully aware as the pregnancy was taking a toll on her.
She said Deonanan told her that he had met Tang Foon who was interested in investing in the company, and he needed a second person to sign for the transaction to be completed.
In her affidavit, she said he told her the business was taking the money so it was the business that would pay back the money.
She said she was unaware that she was signing a document that made her a guarantor.
Ramroop said she only became aware that she signed as a guarantor when the claimant allegedly tried to force her to repay the loan. She said she never collected any money from the arrangement.
Tang Foon is being represented by attorney Abdel Mohammed while attorney Robin Ramoutar is seeking Ramroop’s interest.
